Galia Goodman
Galia Goodman
I’m Galia Goodman. I have been creating works on paper for almost thirty years. I started with traditional Jewish papercuts with calligraphy in both Hebrew and English, and have branched out into collage landscapes, mixed media abstract work and traditional watercolor sea and landscapes. I use gouache, watercolor, inks and acrylic paints, a wide variety of hand-made papers, metallic leaf, and natural and found objects in my work.
I have experimented with many styles over the years, mostly to keep from becoming bored. I love experimenting with new techniques and materials, and can often be found messing about with odd substances on the back deck of my home in an effort to keep the fumes away from my family. I collect odd bits of things as I find them, and I have many plastic bins full of stuff for collages: Paper (of course), leaves, feathers, ribbons, swatches of material, plastic netting, metallic leaf and screening, bits of lace, mylar and magazine photos.
While I still love the traditional papercut work that I started with, which is best represented by the Ketubah to your right, I also love the more free-wheeling and imaginative collage work I’ve been doing for the last dozen years. I originally started doing collage as backgounds for the the greeting cards I began developing in the mid nineties, and liked them so much that I began to work on a larger scale, often incorporating Hebrew and English calligraphy, but in a far looser form than in previous pieces. I hope you enjoy the results!
